Lucky to escape Thailand bombings

BANGKOK, Thailand  (2 Jan 2007) --  A British man was reunited with his girlfriend last night after she escaped the Bangkok New Year bombings by seconds.

Garry Mullett, aged 33, of Lower Goodwin Close, off Stitch-mi-Lane, Harwood, comforted girlfriend Goi as she told of her lucky escape as eight bombs rocked the Thailand capital, killing three and injuring dozens.

Property developer Goi, aged 26, had been travelling across the city on a bus that blew up seconds after she got off it to go to her nearby office.

Garry, a scuba diving instructor in Pattaya, said: "I was really scared when I heard about the bombings, but Goi phoned me soon afterwards to say she was safe. She had a lucky escape."

Garry, who went to Bury Grammar School and Birmingham University where he studied French and Italian, worked in the computer games industry for several years, before travelling and going to Thailand.

Nine bombs exploded across the Thai capital on New Year's Eve and the early hours of New Year's Day, with many holidaymakers caught up in the panic.

Britons Alistair Graham, aged 47, and Paul Hewitt, aged 55, were among seven tourists hurt at a shopping precinct popular with visitors.

A young foreigner had her leg blown off. The two Britons were treated at a city hospital.

An Irishman, an American and two Serbs were among the 38 injured.

Four of the victims are critically ill.

The bombings capped a year of unrest in the troubled country which had a bloodless military coup three months ago.

Southern Thailand has also seen violence.

Garry said: "The country is still struggling to overcome the death and destruction of the tsunami. It's Goi's second narrow escape.

Thailand bombings
A foreign couple received treatment for injuries from one of at least eight bombs that rocked Thailand's capital as people celebrated the New Year.

"She was due to be in Phuket on Boxing Day when the tsunami struck. But she was taken ill over Christmas and cancelled the trip at the last minute."

Both Garry and Goi have travelled the world.

Garry is due to go to Canada in the next few weeks while Goi has recently spent some time on business in Scandinavia.

Garry said: "We thought of settling in Thailand, but now we aren't so sure."
