ANTIGUA (25 Jan 2009) — An Australian yachtsman has been shot dead in an apparent robbery in the Caribbean island of Antigua. Drew Gollan, 38, was killed near a police station at English Harbour - his girlfriend was shot in the foot. The couple had been walking home from dinner when their attacker grabbed a handbag belonging to Mr Gollan's girlfriend. According to reports, the gun went off during the mugging, grazing her foot and the yacht skipper gave chase. He was then shot several times in the chest. Antigua police have increased patrols in a dockyard area where the shooting is worrying the affluent boating community, despite the new measures. Yachts due to leave the harbour in the next few days have brought forward departure plans and are on their way out of the island. Four captains had left by Saturday the local maritime group said, warning that others planned to pull up anchor, too. Crime has been rising on the island, where a honeymooning British couple, Benjamin and Catherine Mullany, died after being shot in an apparent robbery in July. Friends have left tributes on Mr Gollan's Facebook page. "You just couldn't help liking him, he was just always so bloody friendly… sometimes you hear the eulogy of someone written in such glowing terms that you think cynically there is no way this person can be as amazing as described - but Drew is one of those." |
