ST. JOHN'S, Antigua (4 Feb 2009) — Flashing a smile that belied the seriousness of the charge he faces, the 21-year-old man accused of murdering Australian yacht skipper, Drew Gollan, made his first court appearance on Monday. When Sylvester Lindsey emerged from the All Saints Magistrates Court after being denied bail, he gave thumbs up and smiled broadly for the cameras and those gathered on the compound. His cheerful manner was in stark contrast to the disposition of the friends and family of Gollan, 38, after he was shot in English Harbour, in the south of the island, on January 22nd. Lindsey is also accused of shooting the sailor's girlfriend, Alena Sitkova, with intent to kill her. He will reappear in court on both charges on May 13 for committal proceedings for a High Court trial. It has been alleged that Gollan, Sitkova and their 21-month-old child were confronted by an assailant who shot the woman in one of her toes before shooting the yacht captain in his chest. The child was unharmed. The incident sent shock waves across the country which was still recovering from the shooting deaths of British newlyweds, Ben and Catherine Mullany, six months ago as they wrapped up their honeymoon on the island. On the heels of the Gollan shooting, members of the yachting community and others in the area complained about inadequate police presence. Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Bennett subsequently increased foot and mobile patrols in the area. |
