Pirates attack, kill British yachtie in Thailand

PHUKET, Thailand (28 Mar 2009) — The widow of the British sailor beaten to death by pirates told yesterday how his killers laughed and joked as if they were enjoying a picnic.

Lindy Robertson, 57, described the aftermath of husband Malcolm's brutal murder as surreal.

And she believes he would be alive today if he had not tried to protect her from the monsters who stormed their yacht off Thailand before fleeing in a dinghy.

Speaking from the southern Thai province of Satun, Lindy said: "It was such a banal situation, because it was like three boys having a picnic.

"They were eating food, laughing and joking. One was playing tunes on my mobile. It was so surreal. I can't believe that having just killed my husband, they switched it off in their minds.

"They were not professional pirates - and thank God they weren't, because I am here to tell the story."

The body of 64-year-old Malcolm has still not been found after he was beaten with hammers, stabbed and thrown overboard during the early hours of Tuesday.

Gran Lindy was held captive for 10 hours, bound naked, as the men ransacked their yacht Mr Bean. Lindy, from St Leonards, East Sussex, - who is being comforted in Thailand by her two sons and Malcolm's children - added: "I know in my heart Malcolm was just trying to protect me.

"He was not the sort of man that who would just sit back and let something happen but I wish really that he had been.

Who knows he could be here now as well. I think the fact he tried to get them off the boat was a mistake."

The couple had spent the last decade sailing the world.

Today three Burmese migrants aged 17, 19 and 20 will face a Thai court after allegedly confessing to Malcolm's murder.
