NEW YORK, New York (28 Apr 2009) — Airlines and travel agencies in Asia, Europe and North America announced cancellation of all flights and tours to Cancun, Cozumel, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta following Mexico's swine flu outbreak. Europe's two largest travel agencies, TUI AG and Thomas Cook Group Plc, canceled all flights and tours to Cancun, Cozumel and other destinations in Mexico. TUI announced that it would repatriate customers and would not resume flights to Mexico until the Foreign and Commonwealth Office changed its advice warning travelers to avoid all but essential travel to Mexico. Thomas Cook announced that it would allow customers booked on trips to Mexico to switch to an alternative destination. Canada-based WestJet and WestJet Vacations canceled service to Cancun, Cozumel, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and will not resume service until June 20, 2009 at the earliest. All travel from Canada to Mexico has been suspended by Air Transat, Nolitours, Transat Holidays, Sunquest Vacations and Sunwing Vacations. Air Canada and Air Canada Vacations said it will suspend all operations to Cancun, Cozumel and Puerto Vallarta until June 1. Six major cruise lines including Carnival Cruise Lines announced cancellation of port stops for ships scheduled to dock in Mexico. JTB, Japan's largest tour agency, has canceled all tours to Mexico through June 30. More than 160 people have died of flu-related causes in Mexico, and the World Health Organization raised its global pandemic alert yesterday, saying the disease is no longer containable." Many nations have issued travel warnings advising tourists to avoid Mexico including the UK, Canada, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, the United States, France, Germany, Cuba and Argentina. |
