PADI 5-Star 'American Dive Center' Open Water student death under investigation

August 20, 2003

POMPANO BEACH, Florida The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a tourist who died while Scuba diving in rough waters off Pompano Beach.

BSO officials said the 60-year-old woman, identified as Cynthia Kratter of Forest Hills, N.Y., died Wednesday morning during a one-on-one offshore lesson

Kratter was trying to obtain her diving certification and was with scuba diving instructor, Paride DeCalice, 32, from the American Dive Center of Boca Raton.

According to officials, bad weather set in just moments before Kratter and DeCalice began their dive, about 100 feet offshore near the 3300 block of Southeast Eighth Street.

According to a BSO spokesperson, Kratter was not yet connected to her air tank and became separated from DeCalice, who tried to locate her but was unsuccessful.

DeCalice called 911 after returning to shore at around 8:39 a.m. and then returned to the water to find Kratter unconscious, floating in about 10 feet of water.

He pulled her to shore and began performing CPR.

Pompano Beach Fire Rescue transported Kratter to Imperial Point Medical Center, where she died, BSO officials said.

An autopsy has been ordered by the Broward County medical examiner, to determine the exact cause of death.

A spokesman for the American Dive Center called the death, "a tragedy" that is being investigated, but refused further comment.
