POMPANO BEACH, Florida (September 29, 2003) -- A Plantation man was killed following a scuba diving expedition when he slipped from his boat and was carried away by the current while still wearing his weight belt. Terry Zobel, 42, was shedding his equipment after scuba diving with his brother-in-law, Don Silver, in the ocean south of the Hillsboro Inlet off Pompano Beach, the Broward Sheriff's Office said. After handing most of his equipment to Silver on Sunday, Zobel slipped into the water still wearing his weight belt and was carried 25 feet away by the current, BSO spokesman Hugh Graf said. Silver, who had taken off his dive equipment, tried to rescue Zobel. He found him near the bottom of the ocean but could not bring him to the surface, Graf said. | | A BSO diver who had arrived dove in and brought Zobel up. Graf said Zobel appeared to have drowned. The official cause would be determined by an autopsy. "It appears to be a horrible, tragic accident," Graf said. Zobel worked in corporate finance and was named a senior vice president and senior marketing manager for the Southeast division of Fleet Capital Corp. in May 2000. |
