HIGHLAND, Utah (Oct. 2, 2003) -- Rescuers recovered the bodies of two brothers who died after scuba diving in a concrete pipe that diverts water from an irrigation canal to a farm field.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff told CDNN the bodies of Ashton Hobbs, 21, and Byron Hobbs, 23, were found in a 365-meter (1200-ft) long pipe, which is grated at one end.

Rescuers rappelled into the pipe and found the dead scuba divers after partially draining the irrigation canal.

"The pipe is eight feet wide and acts as a conductor to move water along," Cannon told CDNN. "Once you go inside of it, there are only two ways out, but the pipe has a grate at one end."

Family members, who called authorities after the brothers failed to return from their dive trip, were at the rescue scene when the bodies were recovered.

The irrigation canal is posted "NO SWIMMING" and according to Cannon is not for diving.
