GOLD COAST, Australia (20 Feb 2004) --  A BODY found floating in the ocean off Byron Bay has been identified by police as that of a 31-year-old spear fisherman who went missing on Monday.

NSW Police said the body of Mark Bryant was found about 4.30pm (AEDT) yesterday by two men surfing off Tallows Beach, on the NSW north coast.

Mr Bryant was last seen snorkelling from a private vessel with friends off Cook Island.

Police at the time feared he may have been the victim of a shark attack because several large tiger sharks were sighted in the area.

However, today police said no conclusion could be reached until a post-mortem examination was conducted.

The missing man's spear gun was retrieved with a fish on it, leading to speculation the bleeding fish may have attracted a shark.
