HINCKLEY, Leicestershire (23 Feb 2004) -- An investigation is under way after a female diver died following an accident at a scuba centre. The woman, who has not yet been named, was rescued from the water at Stoney Cove diving centre, near Hinckley, Leicestershire, after running low on air and rushed to hospital suffering from decompression sickness, also know as 'the bends'. A spokeswoman for the centre said the diver was treated in Leicester Royal Infirmary intensive care unit following the incident on Saturday, but was later confirmed dead. The alarm was raised when the woman's companion surfaced and informed staff that she was in difficulty. Diving centre spokeswoman Margaret Baldwin said: "Shortly before midday, two qualified divers from East Anglia visiting Stoney Cove for a pleasure dive got into difficulty. "The male diver came to the surface and raised the alarm that his buddy was under the water and low on air. "Stoney Cove's rescue procedure was immediately activated, search divers were deployed and the emergency services called. Stoney Cove Marine Trials, the company that operates Stoney Cove, was found guilty of negligence and fined £47,500 after it admitted breaking the law in the death of Paul Gallacher, an inexperienced diver who died during an IANTD technical scuba diving course at the quarry. |
