MELBOURNE, Australia (11 July 2004) -- A STUDENT scuba diver died after he was separated from his instructor and class off Portsea pier yesterday. The 37-year-old Mordialloc man was one of five students getting instruction in shallow water about 10.30am. Sea kayak instructor Gary Grant, owner of Bay Play Adventures, was preparing a different class of his own on the shore when he saw a group calling for help 20m from shore. "We were in the middle of setting up and I saw a group of people calling out for help," he said. "I have first-aid training and so did one of the girls with me so we went in, pulled him ashore and started CPR and EAR." | | Mr Grant and his assistant continued trying to save the man until ambulance officers arrived 10 minutes later. James Howe, of the Metropolitan Ambulance Service, said paramedics tried to revive the man but he died at the scene. It was unclear whether the scuba diver died from a medical condition or a diving-related accident. The police search and rescue squad was investigating. Police have not released the name of the diving company involved. SOURCE - Herald Sun |
