Ship propeller kills commercial scuba diver in Malta

B'BUGIA, Malta (11 July 2004) -- A commercial scuba diver was killed and early Sunday morning in a freak accident at the Malta Freeport, Birzebbugia.

Raymond Van Beek, a 40-year-old diver from the Netherlands living in Malta, died when he was struck by the propeller of a ship he was inspecting at about 9:30am.

According to police, Van Beek was conducting a routine inspection of a container ship when one of its bow thrusters was suddenly activated.

Agents for the German-owned vessel said the cause of the accident was not yet known.

 

Van Beek is survived by his Maltese wife and two young children.

The Birzebugia police and maritime safety experts are continuing their investigation of the tragedy.
