TOLEDO, Ohio (10 August 2004) -- An Ann Arbor man was in stable condition Monday after nearly drowning during a scuba diving class in the White Star Park Quarry Sunday.

Edward Hathaway, 60, of Ann Arbor was in a dive class at the park when he began to have trouble breathing, said Steve Gruner, director of the Sandusky County Parks District.

Hathaway was helped ashore by a friend, but began coughing up blood, according to reports at the Sandusky County Sheriff's Office.

"It's my understanding that he had prior medical condition that probably caused the difficulty," Gruner said.

Gruner expected to receive more complete report of the incident soon.

At 1:27 p.m., Life Squad 14 treated and transported Hathaway to Gibsonburg High School where members of the Gibsonburg Fire Department set up a landing zone for Life Flight.

Hathaway was transported to The Toledo Hospital, where a spokeswoman said he was in stable condition Monday. Because of medical privacy laws, she was unable to provide any additional information.
