SAN DIEGO, California (16 August 2004) -- A 55-year-old diver died at La Jolla Shores on Sunday after being pulled out of the ocean unconscious, a lifeguard lieutenant said.

Divers who found the San Diego man brought him to shore about 1:30 p.m. at the beach at Vallecitos Street, San Diego lifeguard Lt. Brant Bass said.

"They saw bubbles in the ocean and they went over to investigate and found him unconscious," Bass said of the divers.

Lifeguards administered CPR but the man was "in full cardiac arrest," Bass said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, Bass said.

His name was withheld until his next of kin could be notified, medical examiner James Ramirez said.
