Fiji dive center owner, scuba diving student swept out to sea: Mother pleads for help

RACKI-RACKI, Fiji (2 Sep 2004) -- The mother of a woman who has gone missing in Fiji while scuba diving has appealed to the Australian Government to help.

Janice Gibbons from Bega on the far south coast of New South Wales is calling on the Foreign Affairs Office to send in Australian personnel who are already in the area to help with the search.

Mrs Gibbons says her 27-year-old daughter Danielle was learning how to dive near Racki-Racki on Tuesday when she and the owner of the diving school went missing.

The two were left diving at one end of the reef in strong currents while the boat went to the other end of the reef. When the two divers failed to rendevous with the boat, a search was mounted.

"They've had two nights in the water," she said. "I just want everyone to help, in particular the Australian Navy and Airforce.

"Apparently they are in the area, they're in the Solomon Islands and they can come over, but we have to plead with the Australian authorities for that to happen."
