HYOGO, Japan (13 Sep 2004) -- A scuba diver died while practicing diver rescue techniques with other divers in Takeno.

According to police reports, Mutsuko Tomiyoshi, 32, was one of eight medical professionals practicing emergency scuba diving ascents at 1:00 am on Sunday just 30 meters offshore.

Tomiyoshi, a pharmacist who had been diving for four years, was demonstrating an emergency technique in which divers ditch their scuba units and ascend on a rope to the surface.

Other divers in the group said something went wrong during the demonstration and they had to pull Tomiyoshi to shore.

The stricken diver was rushed to hospital but died about two and a half hours later.

A police investigation continues to determine the exact cause of Tomiyoshi's death.
