'Absolute rubbish': No way missing Fiji divers faked their disappearance

SUVA, Fiji (21 Sep 2004) -- Fiji police investigating the disappearance of two foreign divers missing in the Vatu i Ra passage say they have not ruled out the possibility that the pair may have staged their disappearance.

Police say they are now pursuing new leads into the disappearance Australian national Danielle Gibbons and her American dive instructor, Dan Grenier.

"The sea search may have been called off but the investigation is still continuing," says police spokesman Mesake Koroi. "Obviously, these two may have eloped, or got out of the country, so we need to find that out. I haven't ruled that out but perhaps it's still too early to say; but we're still investigating the case."

The pair has been missing for three weeks.

Last week, an undamaged wetsuit belonging to be Gibbons' was discovered on a reef in the Yasawas.

In an earlier interview with Radio Fiji, Gibbons' sister Corrine rejected any notion that the missing divers staged their disappearance.

"That's absolute rubbish. When things like this happen, people like to speculate and over-sensationalize things. That's ludicrous. There's no chance of that happening."
