HAMILTON, Bermuda, (11 Sep 2003) -- At least two major resort properties have closed indefinitely after the northern eye of Hurricane Fabian pounded the islands last Friday morning. The Fairmont Southampton will be closed for two to six months. The Sonesta Beach Resort Bermuda will be closed even longer -- likely until the end of next April. Also closed, until March of 2004, is the Pink Beach Club. Fairmont's other Bermuda property, the Fairmont Hamilton Princess, was also damaged by the storm and had to close approximately 25 percent of its guestrooms. | | With winds of up to 125 miles per hour, Fabian was declared by the National Hurricane Center to be the most powerful hurricane to hit Bermuda in 77 years. It destroyed homes, downed power lines, grounded planes, and took four lives. Damage from Fabian could cost insurers $350 million. |
